What Is Sewer Smoke Testing?
Sewer smoke testing is a diagnostic method used to help locate possible openings where sewer gas or odors may enter a building. A technician introduces visible test smoke into the drain or vent system and watches for smoke escaping through unintended locations.
Escaping smoke can point to loose connections, damaged piping, open fittings, vent problems, missing cleanout caps, or dry or improperly connected traps. The test helps narrow down the source of an odor when the issue cannot be found through a visual check alone.
Smoke testing serves a different purpose from a sewer camera inspection. A camera shows visible conditions inside an accessible pipe, while smoke testing helps reveal openings along the drainage and vent system where smoke can escape.
The results identify areas that need closer examination; they do not by themselves determine every repair. Charlie’s Sewer & Drain can review the findings, explain the likely source, and recommend an appropriate next step for your Burbank property.
